New and Old Presque Isle Lighthouses

Two of the oldest and most interesting lighthouses on the shores of Lake Huron are located within one mile of each other in Presque Isle, about 20 miles northeast of Alpena. New Presque Isle, which dates to 1870, is the tallest lighthouse on Lake Huron. A spectacular view awaits those who will climb the tower's 130 steps.

New Presque Isle is a working lighthouse with a 100-acre park, gift shop, picnic areas and hiking trails A mile south stands the 1840 lighthouse which was replaced because ships had trouble seeing it. Hand-hewn stone steps lead to the top for a panoramic view of the shoreline and Presque Isle Harbor.

The keeper's quarters serve as a hands-on museum; here you can learn how to "shoot the sun" with an old brass sextant, sit on a horsehair couch and examine other interesting artifacts. You can also ring the huge bronze bell from the Lansing City Hall and then pose for the perfect photo opportunity with your head and hands in an old set of stocks.
