Special Events
It seems as though something special is always going on in Alpena. Festivals and events that celebrate Independence Day, antique steam engines, classic cars, lighthouses, Santa Claus, the Thunder Bay River, and a fish called “Big Brownie” are just a smattering of the special events that take place in Alpena year ‘round. Great performances at the Alpena Fine Arts Shell, Alpena High School Auditorium, the Alpena County Library and Alpena Community College’s Granum Theatre are scheduled throughout the year.

Visiting Presque Isle Michigan, whish is halfway between Alpena and Rogers City, is truly a maritime experience since we are home to two Lighthouses.
The oldest, built in 1840, is the smaller of the two and is no longer in service, but can be climbed. The newest tower, built in 1870, is the tallest tower on the Great Lakes which is open to the public for climbing and is still in service.
Both towers have adjacent lightkeeper's dwellings which are restored and open to visitors.
