Special Events

It seems as though something special is always going on in Alpena. Festivals and events that celebrate Independence Day, antique steam engines, classic cars, lighthouses, Santa Claus, the Thunder Bay River, and a fish called “Big Brownie” are just a smattering of the special events that take place in Alpena year ‘round.  Great performances at the Alpena Fine Arts Shell, Alpena High School Auditorium, the Alpena County Library and Alpena Community College’s Granum Theatre are scheduled throughout the year.

WATER WARRIORS RIDE WAVES IN 350-MILE ENDURANCE RIDE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS MICHIGAN

19th Annual Endurance Ride to Raise Funds,
Awareness for Special Olympics

July, 2009 – The Water Warriors will launch their personal watercrafts Monday, July 20 for the 19th Annual Endurance Ride to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI).

The Water Warriors will travel 400 miles in five days beginning July 20 in Mackinaw City, riding the entire length of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, ending July 24 at Idle Hour Yacht Club, Harsens Island.

Since the Water Warriors started in 1991 as a subsidiary of the Wertz Warriors snowmobile endurance ride, they have raised more than $1.5 million for SOMI.

Each day of the ride has pre-planned fuel and rest stops, along with fundraisers and overnight accommodations. During the ride, boat support crews travel along with the personal watercraft riders to ensure their safety. Land support crews travel by land to assist riders and boat support. Special Olympics Michigan athletes will greet and cheer on riders at many stops.

To become a rider, individuals must be 18 years or older and raise a minimum of $1,800 for SOMI. Shorter rides and financial commitments are available. Some riders solicit funds through their business associates, while others host fundraisers such as pig roasts, spaghetti dinners, golf tournaments and poker runs, among others.

The Water Warriors Endurance Ride helps individuals with intellectual disabilities participate in year-round sports training and athletic competition. Because of groups like the Water Warriors, these programs are available at no cost to the athletes or their families.

The Water Warriors are comprised of people from all walks of life, brought together by their passion for water sports and desire to change lives. The Water Warriors are a statewide civic partner of SOMI.

To find out more about SOMI and the Water Warriors, visit www.somi.org. If you would like to make a donation or become a Water Warrior, please call Rowena Filary at (586) 468-2412.
