It seems as though something special is always going on in Alpena. Festivals and events that celebrate Independence Day, antique steam engines, classic cars, lighthouses, Santa Claus, the Thunder Bay River, and a fish called “Big Brownie” are just a smattering of the special events that take place in Alpena year ‘round. Great performances at the Alpena Fine Arts Shell, Alpena High School Auditorium, the Alpena County Library and Alpena Community College’s Granum Theatre are scheduled throughout the year.

SPACE SCIENCE SATURDAYS
The Besser Museum for NE MI is proud to present SPACE SCIENCE SATURDAYS. This workshop is for kids ages 9-11 years old, with instructor Mike Stoll and is geared to introduce children to the wonders of outer space through HANDS-ON learning! The workshop will run every Saturday starting Jan. 14 through Feb. 25.
Topics include:
- Our Solar System: Kids will learn about planets and their place in space and discover the difference between comets and asteroids.
- Sun-sational: Kids will learn everything centers around the sun and discover why the Sun is the power source for our planet.
- Starry Night: Students will locate constellations and other familiar stars, learn not all stars are the same (distance, color, age and size) and discover the difference between a nova, super nova and nebula.
- Moon Madness: Students will "travel" to the dark side of the moon and understand the phases of the moon.
- Pioneers of Astronomy: Students will learn about famous discoveries and inventions that advanced our understanding of the universe

2nd ANNUAL HOOPS FOR HOPE
Alpena Community College, Alpena High School, Alpena Cancer Center and Alpena Regional Medical Center Development Council are partnering to host three Alpena “Pink Out” basketball games in February.
The AHS Girl’s Varsity team plays Tuesday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. and the AHS Boy’s Varsity play Friday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Alpena Community College Lady Lumberjacks tip off Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.
The 2012 Hoops for Hope edition t-shirts are available at the ACC Bookstore, AHS Campus Closet and the ARMC Development Department for a minimum donation of $10. A chance of winning a pink gift basket will be given to anyone wearing a Hoops for Hope t-shirt at the designated games, the pink game ball will also be raffled off during each game, with additional raffles and activities. Proceeds from all of the events will benefit the ARMC Mammography Subsidy fund.
